the blue dress

by Joanna on April 2, 2013

On the way to LOFT at lunch yesterday I said to my friend “I’ve been feeling a little pudgy lately, finally realizing how much weight I put on this winter so I’m just going to look for a cardigan to go over the dress I already have. I was trying on dresses at H&M this weekend and I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. There’s nothing worse than standing in a dressing room in your underwear and feeling fat.”

But then LOFT had so many cute things and I picked up a few dresses and skirts to try on.  As I walked into the dressing room I thought, “oh, I said I wasn’t going to do this.”

Instead of turning around or feeling sorry for myself I made a decision:

I’m going to love my body the way it is right now.

Yep, that’s right.

I’m going to love my body the way it is right now.

Because what else can you do in that moment? You can berate yourself, or you can choose to love yourself.

I chose the latter.

Not only did I end up not getting the “is-that-what-I-really-look-like/i’m-so-fat/ugh” feeling, I ended up getting a blue dress in my normal size that fit perfectly (even after I told my friend I’d probably need the next size up).

How’s that for a reward for self-love?

This is something I believe in so strongly! Good for you! Over the years I’ve learned that I’m so much happier when I’m kinder to my body. I’ve also found that I have a body I love because of this positive approach. It all works together: I eat better and move more when I love my body vs. when I want it to look a different way. And it feels like so much less effort to keep it this way when coming for a positive place!

Thanks for your note, Paige! You always leave really thoughtful comments!

It’s nice to hear that someone else gets what I’m saying and agrees that this approach works. I hope other women will realize that when it comes to yourself, love does NOT hurt.

super cute dress! And you’re body is beautiful! I always have those feelings… especially now because I have put on a ton of weight. more importantly though, I’m not as healthy as I should/want to be, but I feel better everyday knowing I’m working on it. I had originally decided not to buy any new clothes until I lose the weight I want to lose because otherwise I feel like I’d be wasting my money, but then I decided to treat myself at little milestones. Nothing like tiny little motivations, right?

Btw, Loft has 50% off today.

Thanks! It sounds like a good idea to reward yourself at little milestones. Feeling good throughout the process will make you want to keep going!

Oh, I know about the 50% off! Just got back! One dress, skirt, and necklace later… :)
